What We Think
Every automaker benchmarks itself against the best. For the midsize segment, the BMW 3-series is that benchmark.
The 2009 BMW 3-series is available in coupe, sedan, hardtop convertible and wagon body styles. All come as the BMW 328i in base form with rear-wheel drive and drawing power from 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive, which BMW calls xDrive, is available for coupe, sedan and wagon BMW 328i models. Moving up to 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged six-cylinder 335i models is possible with the coupe, sedan and convertible, with the sedan and coupe also available with xDrive. A six-speed automatic transmission is available for all 328i and 335i models. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder engine powers the BMW 335d sedan, a new addition for 2009. The 335d comes standard with the six-speed automatic. Bigger news for 2009, however, is that the iDrive multifunction controller has been completely revamped for much easier use. Standard features include dynamic stability control and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes and hill-start control. The audio system has 10 speakers, an auxiliary input jack, CD player and MP3 playback.
